Holmlands Adventure Film Festival comes to Langholm this September, bringing six extraordinary adventure films to the big screen at The Buccleuch Centre for one special evening.
Following our London screenings, the Langholm programme brings together independent filmmakers from around the world for an evening celebrating adventure, exploration, wildlife and the natural world — with three UK Premieres, including the big-screen debut of local film, Moving Stories – Langholm MTB.
The programme also includes The Extra Mile — following a mountaineer's journey to Everest with a message about protecting mountain environments — alongside Best Day Ever, Sand, Grit and Discovery: The Crescent Crossing, The Long Way Home and Northbound.
From mountaineering and adaptive mountain biking to trail running and surfing, expect remarkable journeys, extraordinary characters, wild places and stories that capture the true spirit of adventure.

The Extra Mile (UK Premiere)

Mountaineer Bernardo Fonseca embarks on a challenging journey to the summit of Mount Everest, with the goal of delivering a message to the world about the importance of conserving mountain environments, showcasing both their beauty and vulnerability. The film portrays how he discovered ongoing positive initiatives for waste management and cleanup, from the villages of the Khumbu Valley to the high-altitude camps, and how he was inspired by both locals and outsiders who are making a difference. The film encourages self-reflection on how we engage with mountaineering from the perspective of sustainability and the impact the sport generates, and it proposes individual actions as “one more step” toward protecting these natural environments.

Best Day Ever follows the stories of adaptive mountain bikers Greg Durso and Allie Bianchi as they navigate the relentless challenges of their disabilities and embrace the tremendous support, friendship and joy they find in their rural Vermont riding community. Allie and Greg navigate disability and regain independence with humour, attitude, and grit on mountain bike trails that dismantle ableism, build community, and become a blueprint for trails anywhere.
Sand, Grit and Discovery: The Crescent Crossing

In January 2025, 2 friends, Gavin Booth and Adam Wilton, embarked on a crossing of the Saudi Arabian Rub' al Khali, the "Empty Quarter". It was a first of its kind expedition, with the men hauling all of their supplies and water in carts across this vast and unforgiving desert with no support.

Moving Stories uses creativity to bring people together around active and sustainable travel - focusing on how people move, the routes, services and transport networks they already use and why, while exploring new opportunities as they emerge through lived experience, local identity and shared stories.
This films follows a group of young mountain bikers in Langholm who are creating and riding trails in the local area. The film showcases the talent and enthusiasm of the young people as well as the beautiful area that they call home.
